Farewell Steve Nawi

23 07 2011

This morning, before I awoke, at his home in Norwood, New Jersey, Steve Nawi succumbed to cancer and ascended into the immortal realm. Steve was an extraordinary man in my view and I want to tell you a bit about him.  He and I were brothers-in-law for the 20 years of my first marriage and he was a most generous Uncle to my daughters and a gracious host whenever I visited him.  I think that Generosity is the quality I will most remember of him.

And I will remember his abiding gratitude for the successes he earned in life.   We spoke years ago of his journey to America after his escape from Iraq.  Yes, he escaped, back in the early 1970′s.  You see, Steve was a Baha’i.  And in Iraq in those days, that was punishable by death.  And if being Baha’i wasn’t crime enough for that regime, Steve also happened to be of Jewish descent. That was certainly double-trouble.  In those days, Jews in that country were not afforded citizenship rights of any kind, so getting a passport was out of the question. Steve escaped by way of the Canadian Embassy.  From Canada he moved to New York and became a successful American businessman through relentless hard work and sheer determination.

I won’t tell my many Steve stories, I just want you to know that a fine man has passed at the age of 64 – way to early in my opinion.  And he will be missed.

If you have a moment, please say a prayer for his spiritual progress in the next world and for the peace and happiness of his wife Kathy and their grown children, David and Nancy, still living in this one.

VLOG#6 – Some impressive young musicians

10 07 2011

In this VLOG, I encourage you to check out some new artists I have recently found through my friends from Music Industry Weekend.  Robert Gillies who has recently graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston introduced me to the work of schoolmates Brian Dunne and Mike Squillante.  Through Gustaff Besungu, percussionist for Pamaligus, and that trio’s wonderful guitarist/singer/songwriter Ali Youssefi, I recently heard Michael Gannon’s new album and downloaded it right away.

I hope you will avail yourself of these links for the folks I mentioned:

“Storm Comin’ Through” new MLOG

3 07 2011

Here’s a brand new video of a brand new song called “Storm Comin’ Through”. It’s about storms – but not necessarly the weather kind. Give it a listen for it’s 4 minutes, and tell me what you think. We had a terrific dust storm here last night, so “Monsoon season” has started in the desert. Hold on tight.

I just wrote this song a few weeks ago.  I just turned on my recording deck and two additional cameras and played and sang the song live. So this is basically a live solo performance, from me to you.

I did some audio production (eq, reverb) using Logic Express and produced the video with iMovie.  In my haste, I forgot to add a special THANKS to Kamal Delchad at http://kamaldelchad.com for the lightning photos I use in the video.  He took those in Arizona the night of my daughter’s wedding.

PS - Brian Taraz just alerted me that the vocal audio drops out on one side when the song starts! SORRY about that.  had a glitch somewhere I will have to discover and prevent it next time.  But then, I never learned anything new, by doing it right the first time!
