Jazz legend James Moody passed away Thursday 9 Dec, after a bout with cancer. His wife Linda was with him and reported that Moody (as he preferred to be called) had the pleasure of seeing many family and friends before his passing and experienced the joyful arrival of his great grandson on Oct 22.
I first met Moody about 14 years ago in CA when his wife Linda became my Real Estate agent. Words fail me when I try to express what a fine man he was. He was a Baha’i. He was a renaissance man. He was a romantic. That man had a dozen roses delivered to his dear wife’s office every Monday! And every week, she would revel in the joy of being loved by such a man.
Here’s a link to a >> video with a recording << of one of his marevllous Jazz renditions. Moody played with Dizzy Gillespie and many many other Jazz greats. I have a poster hanging in my studio of him and “Diz” that Moody autographed for me back in 1996. I had the pleasure of attending his 80th Birthday party (5 years ago) hosted by Bill Cosby. Moody played with the energy and precision of a man half his age.
My heart goes out to dear Linda, and to the Baha’is who knew and loved him as a brother, and to the world of Jazz which has lost a giant.
