I like to read the newspaper in the morning just to see what’s happening in my area. But like many “local” newspapers these days, ours relies heavily on the Associated Press to fill its pages. Sometimes the stories I see make me chuckle, just from their juxtaposition.
For instance, last week there was an article that decried the President’s use of armed drones against “terrorists” and railed against the announcement that the administration determined for itself that it was OK to kill American citizens engaged in acts of terrorism. Then, just a few days ago, there was an announcement by the KKK that they would be holding “the largest rally ever” in some public parks in Memphis TN which the city had just renamed, dropping the previous names chosen to honor Confederates and even the founder of the KKK. The Tennessee KKK leader – known as the “Exalted Cyclops” (no kidding) – said “You’re going to see the largest rally Memphis, Tennessee has ever seen.”
He said “It’s not going to be 20 or 30, It’s going to be thousands of Klansmen from the whole United States coming to Memphis, Tennessee.”
I had to chuckle. Did the apparently one-eyed KKK leader miss the article that said our first black President liked to use killer drones?
Then in this morning’s paper there was a Front-Page article proclaiming in its Bold Headline that women might now be drafted into the military. The article underscored the reason as the President’s lifting of the ban on women serving in combat rolls. The opening lines were sensationally written, obviously aimed at raising alarms, even though the rest of the article mentioned that women have never been drafted, no one is proposing to draft them, and current selective service laws exclude women. Nonetheless, it made a headline out of the prospect that the law MIGHT change. Then, positioned on the back page (number 16) of the paper, was a somewhat shorter article, without a bold headline, mentioning that 2 Congressmen have proposed ending the draft all together.
Excuse me there copy editor, but your partisanship is showing. hahahahahaha!
