I want to wish each of you a happy Thanksgiving. I have the pleasure of enjoying it this year with my extended family.
I hope that in our moments of reflection we will recall those aspects of or lives for which we are truly grateful. For me, it’s family, first and foremost – both born and “acquired”. Some family you have simply by the miracle of birth, others by the miracle of love in the freedom of choice. Whichever miracle unites you, rejoice in the Unity.
A special thank you goes out to my Native American friends whose families over the years have suffered horrendously for the merging of divergent cultures in a time of violent ignorance. I know that some of you view this day with remorse for all that was lost. I respect that perspective. I hope that you will find a way to forgive those of us descended from the tyranny, and those of us arriving later in hopes of escaping tyranny, and build with all, a new Unity worthy of Thanksgiving.
I am also grateful for the sacrifice of young men and women who are in harm’s way today, separated from their families, serving this country around the world. They did not create the situation but are called upon to deal with it. Come home safely soon.
And finally, to some dear friends whose dinner tables are missing a few faces this year due to deaths -this too, shall pass. They are with you still and join in every moment of laughter. Celebrate the miracles.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone.
